Take Classes with Burlesque Legends in New Orleans!

http://www.neworleansburlesquefest.com/Activities.html

SATURDAY, SEPT. 12 5:00 pm Wild Cherry
WILD CHERRY was raised in a circus family, and began dancing in the girlie shows in the carnival circuit. In the late 1950s, Cherry worked as an exotic dancer in the nightclubs on Bourbon Street. Wild Cherry received her stage name from a club owner, who gave her the moniker due to her hot temper. She specialized in "oriental" and Afro-Cuban dancing during her striptease performances. Wild Cherry danced until her mid-forties. She currently can be seen performing her comedic routine and greeting fans at the Bustout Burlesque show.
Learn classic burlesque styling and movement from one of the legends of burlesque, Wild Cherry. She has taught at Tease-O-Rama in San Francisco and the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas. Now you can learn authentic burlesque moves from Miss Cherry, just steps from where she performed as a young woman.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 13 11:00 am
TEE TEE RED, the TNT Girl entered the world of striptease after winning an amateur striptease contest in Miami. The competition was judged by burlesque queen, Zorita, who took the seventeen-year-old dancer under her wing. In 1960, Tee Tee portrayed a stripper in the Jerry Lewis film, The Bellboy. Only one quick shot of Tee Tee made it into the final cut. Her first engagement as a feature was in New Orleans, where she spent the next three years performing at the 500 Club and the Sho Bar. She referred to herself as an exotic acrobatic/comedienne/contortionist. The affair between burlesque superstar Blaze Starr and Governor Earl Long is stuff of legend, but few knew ol’ Earl had his eyes on Tee Tee Red as well, as mentioned in Blaze’s autobiography. After thirty years, Tee Tee finally threw in the g-string at the age of forty-nine, a week shy of her fiftieth birthday.
Trained by 1940s burlesque queen Zorita, Tee Tee Red performed as a striptease dancer for 30 years! For the first time, Tee Tee will teach how to work panel skirts and everything else you've got!

Classes will also be presented by some of neo-burlesque's most accomplished performers!

Classes are available for registration online. Drop-ins are permitted, but class space is limited and your slot is guaranteed only if you pay in advance.

click here to join our email list.

This classes series is for women only.

Learn the moves that make burlesque so much fun! You'll be shimmying, peeling, and rocking it right on the stage of a venue that has been devoted to burlesque for almost a decade. Learn AUTHENTIC burlesque! New York School of Burlesque Headmistress Jo Weldon has learned directly from the ladies who performed during the golden age of twentieth century striptease, and taught these movements, principles and styles to NYSB instructors Darlinda Just Darlinda and Gal Friday.

Click below to register (registration also offered after details description)

Just to give you an idea of what there is to learn, you'll begin with Classic Moves.

Learn the sexy shimmy,

the tantalizing glove peel,

the devastating bump n grind, and the dazzling tassel-twirl

from an internationally recognized striptease expert

with decades of performing experience.

Boas, gloves, shimmy fringe, and pasties will be provided.

Wear clothes you would work out in or take dance class in.

Bring two pairs of shoes if you like, one with high heels and one without.

Skirts are not recommended, nor are flowy sleeves or pantlegs.

For the Classic Moves Class, wear or a backhooking standard bra, recommended not lacey or padded or racerback,
firm cups are the best but not required, to learn the straptease.

Wear layers as the venue temperature fluctuates--bars and dance studios are notorious for this.

This class often sells out in a matter of days. If you are registering with a friend, please register both of you at the same time to ensure that you both get in.

You do not need to be a performer or planning to perform to take these classes. This series is suitable for beginners, as well as for experienced dancers or other types of performers curious about the language of burlesque.

This 7-section class starting Sunday September 7 features:

September 7 2-4 Classic Moves of Burlesque with Tassel-Twirling
Bring a standard back-hooking bra.

September 13 2 pm Isolations

There are no transfers, refunds, or makeup classes if you miss a class.

Your payment is fully refundable up to August 31, and then in no part after that.

Registration is strictly limited to ensure the quality of the class. This series has been added by demand and it always sells out FAST. Please register immediately if you plan to take it at all, and please register with a friend if you intend to take the class together to ensure that you both get in. We are not being pushy but are posting this in response to the deluge of disappointed emails we always get after this class sells out!

Click below to register

Please be sure to get on our email list to be notified of emergencies such as cancellations.

Series only. You may not register for the above classes separately, although you can check back to see when they are offered separately. This is due to limited quantities of space, sightlines, and props, and is not negotiable.

Links will take you to descriptions of classes with various dates. Only the dates on this page are part of the series. You may not be entitled to makeups or date changes; you may not substitute or transfer dates.
Email us to be notified when these classes are offered singly.

Please note, this class usually sells out quickly. If you are planning to attend with a friend, be sure to register both of you at the same time to ensure that you both get a space.

You'll get the basics of the history of burlesque and striptease as
an artform, plus you'll hear plenty of stories of how Jo learned each move from
each amazing performer. There will be information on costuming,
getting gigs, the history of the Burlesque Hall of Fame and burlesque in Coney
Island, where to see burlesque shows in NYC, and more!

You'll learn techniques for twirling nipple tassels to the left, to the right, in, out, one at a time, and on your back!

This is a great way to learn to structure a costume and
compose a burlesque number.

LOCATION: 167 Orchard St at Stanton (The Slipper Room). For directions from your location, visit hopstop.com.

By Subway
The F / V train is the only subway near us. You'll want the 2nd Avenue stop. Make sure you're at the front of the train if coming from uptown, or the back of the train if coming from Brooklyn. More Directions

Teacher's Bio:

Jo Weldon was recently a featured performer in Margaret Cho's variety show, the Sensuous Woman. She served as coach and consultant on the Victor Victrola episode of Gossip Girl. In 2007, the Village Voice named her Best Teacher in their Best of New York issue in Arts and Entertainment. In 2006 she was voted Best Burlesque Teacher and Mentor at the New York Burlesque Festival, and in 2005 she was voted Best Bump N Grinder. She is the judging co-ordinator for the Miss Exotic World Pageant and has been producing at Coney Island's Burlesque at the Beach series for five years. Going back a ways, in the early 1990s she was a feature dancer, traveling across the country with trunks full of props and costumes to headline at strip joints across the US and Canada; she performed her first fan dance in 1991. She also maintains a burlesque blog featuring backstage photos, news items, and interviews at burlesquedaily.blogspot.com.

Refund Policy: We will refund all payments in full if we cancel for any reason. Cancellations that occur during the course of a series will be dealt with on a case by case basis. Deposits are nonrefundable with less than 10 days' notice. If you pay in full in advance and cancel, you will receive a refund minus the deposit amount. If you cancel on short notice, we will most likely be unable to fill your slot, so please respect that the school is an independent institution and do not create that kind of hardship for us. We are an independent neighborhood institution, not a national chain! And no larger institution would give you the leeway on deposits we do; as an independent institution we want to show individual respect to our students, so please respect us back.

Saturday, November 22, 10 pm
MISSION BRIEFING: The world is, as usual, in trouble... menaced this time by the Pernicious INternational Cartel of Horrible Baddies Out To Take Over el Mundo (P.I.N.C.H.B.O.T.T.O.M.), whose plan for global domination -- to use the twirling of burlesque performers' tassels to hypnotize the populace into submission -- is not the most ludicrous in the history of the 007 franchise. But P.I.N.C.H.B.O.T.T.O.M. will soon discover that The Twirl is Not Enough. Because (an unlicensed parody of) James Bond is back... and this time, he has a "License to Pinch" in the undercover extravaganza YOU ONLY PINCH TWICE.
hosted by Nasty Canasta & Jonny Porkpie
starring Anita Cookie, Bastard Keith, Clams Casino, Delirium Tremens, Doc Wasabassco, GiGi La Femme, Jo Boobs, Julie Atlas Muz, Naughtia Nice, Neil O'Fortune, Peekaboo Pointe, Scott Rayow, Tigger!
Jo will be doing a very silly duet with NYSB alumni Miss Clams Casino, winner of the 2008 awards for Most Comedic and Most Innovative at the Miss Exotic World Pageant!

Headmistress Jo Weldon Performs at the Slipper Room!

Look for School of Burlesque Teachers Angie Pontani, Helen Pontani, Jo Weldon, Julie Atlas Muz, and Peekboo Pointe on an upcoming episode of Gossip Girl! The episode is named "In the Realm of the Basses," and no, we can't tell you any of the script secrets! We had a wonderful, wonderful time at the shoot (who is sweeter than Leighton Meester??). We love the people at GG and are beyond excited to have been able to work with them again.
http://www.cwtv.com/shows/gossip-girl

We are also in an upcoming segment on MTV's new cultural station, Iggy. There is a segment of Jo teaching a fan dance to lovely and charming host Angel, as well as a clip about the Student Showcase we had in October. We've seen the clips and they're gorgeous!

And, a shoutout to the amazing Miss Indigo Blue and Dane Ballard, producers of BurlyCon 2008. It was a very special (attendees have gone so far as to say life-changing) event and we are looking forward to the next one!
